Following a recent trip to China, Russia natural gas giant Gazprom continues to move forward on natural gas deals - this time in Turkmenistan. Company and country delegates are expected to continue to discuss this week ways the two parties can strengthen an existing agreement for the export of Turkmenistan natural gas.
Ashkhabad hosted last Friday a meeting dedicated to the Russian-Turkmen cooperation in the gas sector. Russia and Turkmenistan entered into a 25-year Agreement for cooperation in the gas industry on April 10, 2003. In conjunction with that agreement, Gazprom Export, a Gazprom wholly owned subsidiary, and the Turkmenneftegaz gas transmission company signed a long-term contract for the Turkmen natural gas purchase and sale.
Following the results of last Friday's meeting Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee said “the meeting emphasized that Russia and Turkmenistan were the natural strategic partner in the power industry and they would strengthen and expand the scope of cooperation. We discussed long-term prospects to develop our partnership and plans for near future."
Miller confirmed negotiations will continue this week.
In September 2006 the parties agreed on the price and supply quantities in 2007-2009. The price of $100 for 1000 of cubic meters was fixed for the period. In 2007-2009 gas supplies will amount to 50 bcm per year. The parties agreed on principle of adjustment of gas delivery terms in the next triennial period.
Turkmen gas is supplied via the Central Asia – cnter transit gas pipeline network going through Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. In accordance with inter-governmental agreements, Gazprom transits Turkmen gas via Russia to Ukraine and serves as operator of Turkmen gas transit via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
