PrintGoogle’s “green energy czar,” Bill Weihl, will offer an insider’s view of what Google is doing to tackle the climate change problem in his keynote address to the 14th Annual Energy Fest on September 15 at the University of Michigan.
His presentation, titled “Inventing a Clean Energy Future at Google,” also will include what businesses, institutions and individuals can do to help.
Wiehl helped launch the nationwide Climate Savers Computing Initiative (CSCI), of which U-M is a founding member. He is a leading expert on the environmental impacts of information technology. His talk will focus on how smart information technology can reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and how affordable renewable energy can be a solution to global warming. Weihl also will touch on the CSCI @ U-M best practices to reduce the energy consumption of computers, printers and other IT equipment.
He leads Google’s efforts in computing efficiency and renewable energy research and development, and also manages the company’s greenhouse-gas footprint. He has extensive business and technical experience in high-tech, including 10 years as a professor of Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, five years as a research scientist at Digital’s Systems Research Center, and five years as chief architect and then chief technology officer of Akamai Technologies.
